The Durham Region Association of Black Professionals and Entrepreneurs (DRABPE) is a pillar of progress within one of Canada’s most vibrant Black communities. Vision

The Durham Region Association of Black Professionals and Entrepreneurs (DRABPE) is located in Whitby, Ontario and affiliated with the Whitby Chamber of Commerce. Durham Region is home to one of the most vibrant and progressive Black communities in Canada.

DRABPE is focused on supporting this emerging community by helping Black-owned businesses in Durham gain access to the resources they need to thrive. We provide frequent networking  opportunities to help our members get connected to local decision-makers, service providers and potential customers.

Mission & History

Durham Region Association of Black Professionals and Entrepreneurs (DRABPE) was established in 2017 and incorporated in 2018 as a not-for-profit organization. Its mission is to support and connect Black businesses and professionals within Ontario’s Durham Region, one of Canada’s largest and fastest-growing Black communities. DRABPE aims to address poverty, and social inequities, and promote overall wellness through various services, including mentorship, educational programs, and professional networking opportunities.

DRABPE’s initiatives have evolved to meet the community’s growing demands, significantly impacting individuals and businesses by providing crucial support and resources. This includes the STEMM program, which has positively impacted over 30 Black youth since its inception.

Partnerships & Community Connections

DRABPE collaborates with local businesses, educational institutions, and other organizations to amplify its impact. These partnerships enhance service delivery and strengthen the community’s social fabric. Volunteers, including a board of directors and over 20 mentors, play a significant role in supporting initiatives like the STEMM program.

Philosophy & Approach

DRABPE’s philosophy centers on fostering wealth within the Black community by nurturing entrepreneurship and enhancing professional skills. The organization focuses on practical, community-focused interventions to address systemic issues and create long-term economic uplift.

  • July: First Board Meeting, discussing branding.

2018

  • February 20: Incorporation (Letter of Patent effective).
  • April: First in-person event at Debbie’s Cafe.
  • Spring: Launch of the Newsletter.
  • June: Financial Networking event at Rum Diaries.
  • October 24: “Doing Business with the Government” event.
  • December 19: Holiday Mix and Mingle at Rum Diaries.

2019

  • March 13: Event to become more knowledgeable about taxation.
  • April: “Increasing Profits by Increasing Sales” event.
  • September 9: “Back to Business: Information Technology” event.
  • October 22: “Real Estate Strategies for Entrepreneurs” event.

2020

  • February 19: “Your Brand and Social Media” event at Footprints Restaurant.
  • March: First major SBCCI grant received

2021

  • February: “Building our Economy through Black Entrepreneurship” at Ontario Tech.
  • April 22: Financial Literacy Update Series (Online).
  • July: Black Business Brunch in Durham (FACE and BBPA).
  • September 25 and October 2: Durham Black Outdoor Market ~ Fall Edition.
  • September 21: Webinar on Business Financing for the Black Female Entrepreneur.
  • December 12: Durham Black Outdoor Market ~ Winter Edition.

2022

  • July: Launch of Black Business Directory.
  • October 26: DRABPE launches a website for entrepreneurs in Durham Region (Press release).
  • December: Launch of Black Youth Action Plan (BYAP) STEMM Program.

     

2023

  • February-August: Run BYAP program for cohorts 1 and 2.
  • April: Financial Literacy Workshop 1.
  • June: First Fridays Durham launch.
  • July: “Igniting Black Excellence in Durham” (with Nobellum).
  • August: First BYAP graduation ceremony.
  • Drafted a five-year strategic plan to elevate DRABPE to the next level.

2024

  • Drafted Succession Plan
